Syntax or semantics? Response to Lidz et al.

چکیده
Lidz et al. [Lidz, J., Waxman, S., & Freedman, J. (2003). What infants know about syntax but couldn’t have learned: Experimental evidence for syntactic structure at 18 months. Cognition, 89, B65–B73.] claim experimental substantiation of an argument from the poverty of the stimulus, in the sense of Pullum and Scholz [Linguist. Rev. 19 (2002) 9]. They cite a specific feature of English— the assignment of appropriate antecedents for anaphoric one—that cannot possibly be learned from experience because the evidence needed is found only in utterances of a type too rare to be encountered. Their argument involves three empirical claims. In this note we dispute all three. q 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

But do we need universal grammar ? Comment on Lidz
“Noun phrase number is a privileged source of information as to the semantic structure of predicates.” So concludes a recent article by Lidz, Gleitman, and Gleitman (2003: 169), which purports to demonstrate the viability of a “universalist” mapping between syntax and semantics as opposed to an “emergentist” view of the mapping, attributed to Goldberg (1999) and Tomasello (2000). Lidz et al. (2...
متن کاملLearning the unlearnable: the role of missing evidence.
Syntactic knowledge is widely held to be partially innate, rather than learned. In a classic example, it is sometimes argued that children know the proper use of anaphoric one, although that knowledge could not have been learned from experience. Lidz et al. [Lidz, J., Waxman, S., & Freedman, J. (2003). What infants know about syntax but couldn't have learned: Experimental evidence for syntactic...
متن کاملQuantifiers and visual cognition: the processing of proportional and superlative most in Bulgarian and Polish
I provide experimental evidence that quantifier semantics guides visual verification processes (Lidz et al. 2011). I tested the processing of two majority quantifiers in Bulgarian and Polish: the proportional Most1, the counterpart of English most, and the superlative/relative Most2. Three obtained notable results have been obtained: (i) Most1 is verified by a Subtraction strategy, directly rep...
متن کاملLearning Attitude Verb Meanings in a Morphosyntactically-Poor Language
Word meanings are learned under less-than-ideal conditions: in principle, a word can have many possible meanings, and learners must choose the correct one with limited explicit instruction. This problem seems to be exacerbated in the context of attitude verbs, like think, believe, want, which describe abstract mental states. These verbs lack reliable physical correlates in the real world, so th...
متن کاملWhat Autism Can Reveal About Every ... not Sentences
The sentence Every horse did not jump over the fence can be interpreted with the negation taking scope over the quantifier (i.e. not every horse jumped) or with the quantifier Every taking scope over the negation (ultimately providing the reading no horse jumped). Beginning with Musolino, Crain and Thornton (2000), much work has shown that while adults typically adopt a Not every reading in '2-...
